The challenge coin was used to identify a person as belonging to a particular unit. Its origins are believed to have begun during the 1st World War. Some say they were used when challenged by sentries others say that the challenge came when a member was challenged in a bar. At the challenge show me your coin; the flyer would produce the coin and the challenger had to buy him a drink. If not then he bought the drink for the challenger.
Today, the tradition of the challenge coin has extended into the fire services. Many firefighters are as proud of their organizations as Soldiers and Marines are of theirs.
